Warm and Friendly Feeling at Methods of Birthing Talk

Expecting parents, midwives and childbirth educators gathered last evening at the co-op community classroom in Ashland OR for a discussion on the “Methods of Birthing”….. So much loving attention and energy there! – All going toward the goal of helping more and more women achieve the natural childbirth that is their birthright.

Watching OUR NEWLY CREATED VIDEO MONTAGE, I was so thrilled, listening again to words from jubilant parents, past HypnoBirthing couples, who describe their birthing experiences with such passion and detail.

Our next class series begins on April 6th and continues for 5 Saturday afternoons, 2-4:30. Remember, you MUST preregister.

Prenatal Bonding with Your Baby

Babies are fully engaged with us during their time in the womb.  They can hear, see, taste and smell from very early on.  They respond to sounds by startling to loud or frightening noises and moving joyfully to the sounds of their family talking, singing, and playing with them.  They are engaged in an exercise program to strengthen their body and their movements are coordinated to their mother’s voice.

When you develop a relationship with the little one growing inside, it is much easier to focus on the intention that you and baby are working together to create a calm and gentle birthing.

Neonatologist Fred Wirth, introduced the concept of “Fetal Love Breaks”.  These love breaks involve taking 2-3 minutes, several times throughout the day, to connect and send love to your baby.   His research showed that moms and dads who connect regularly with their babies, have fewer complications of pregnancy and better birth outcomes.

Falling in love with our babies, while they are still inside, becomes so natural as we spend time engaging in some of the following activities:

A daily relaxation practice such as taught in your HypnoBirthing classes.  Baby is aware and listening. She or he is being bathed in the mother’s hormones during relaxation and also benefits from peace and calm

Massage your belly with oil or in the bath

Play with the baby when they move and kick, by gently stroking, pushing, and massaging back.

Talk to your baby, and invite family members to talk to the baby as well.  Baby will respond

As the study of fetology has grown, many suggestions for deepening this relationship have been studied and practiced.  One such suggestion involves singing to your baby. Baby will love your singing!  You can begin by singing the same bedtime song before you go to bed each night.  Babies learn to appreciate repetition and are able to recognize a familiar song.   This song can become a nighttime cue to help the baby relax and go to sleep.  My daughter loved her nighttime song so much that once she could talk, if I forgot to sing it, she requested it every night for the next seven years!  Choose a song that is pleasing to you and you will enjoy singing.

You can also choose another song to sing when you are upset.  When mother relaxes so does baby.  Singing this familiar song each time you are upset, to calm yourself down, will teach this same skill to the baby.  In the weeks and months after the birth, this song can help a fussy, inconsolable baby to calm down and relax.

If you need help in finding songs to sing to baby, there are many wonderful recordings of children’s music that you can purchase, or perhaps borrow from friends.

In essence, have fun with your baby.  It will deeply enrich your experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting!

HypnoBirthing and Smiling Babies

I remember so well the thrill of seeing this newborn baby’s smile. Just minutes old, she looked up at her Daddy with a lovely smile as he spoke to her for the first time. It was as if she was saying “Oh hi! It’s you!”  Many people think that it takes days or weeks until you will see a newborn smile.

However in our experience as home birth midwives, it is NOT UNCOMMON for babies to smile

within the first hours or days!  And I don’t mean “just gas!”

In our second class of the series, we focus a lot on pre-birth bonding with your baby.  Parents begin to understand that the baby is here now rather than someone who will arrive “then” at that magical “due time” in the future.  Moms get more tuned into their little ones as they do the HypnoBirthing relaxation practice and the breathing practice.  We encourage moms to do daily “fetal love breaks” (coined by neonatologist Fred Wirth who wrote the book Prenatal Parenting).

Our February Class Series begins February 9th and runs for Five Consecutive Saturday afternoons in Jacksonville.  Preregister as soon as possible!  A gift to yourself in your birthing time and a lifetime gift for your baby!  HypnoBirthing makes a world of difference.  We keep the class  small  on purpose so please don’t wait.  Join you on February 9th!  Your birth partner is welcome of course!

Remember you are invited to return to any class in any series again before your due time to “refresh” and “re-inspire” at no extra charge. However, YOUR PRACTICE is best to start right NOW.

I cannot express strongly enough how important it is to prepare yourself, mind and body, for a gentle natural birth. I have not found ANY class to be as effective as HypnoBirthing in over 30 years as a childbirth educator and midwife.

In love with HypnoBirthing and Waterbirthing

Friday night I attended a home waterbirth of a mama having a baby for the first time.  It was SO BEAUTIFUL!  She had a short and smooth labor, hardly needed any outside support, was in trust with her body.  She did long slow breathing throughout and then at the end it turned into a kind of “Om-ing”  sound with each breath.  She NEVER PUSHED AT ALL but breathed her baby gently and slowly into his papa’s hands.  Afterward, her partner said “It wouldn’t have been like this without all we learned from those HypnoBirthing classes.”  Gentle birthing, healthy baby, healthy mama, happy family.  (P.S. Elated Midwives!)

Stay tuned for dates on upcoming classes.   Next series slated for Mid-February 2013!Big Island Waterfall Cave

I took this photo of a waterfall-cave on the Big Island of Hawaii when I traveled there with Jae Rowan, my friend and HypnoBirth Instructor extraordinaire.  Elena Tonetti, of Birth As We Know It, reminds us that when women enter the water in labor, they are able to become “more like water” in their own being, thus facilitating a flowing openness to the natural hormones of birth.
